On National Road, an original new musical that chronicles historic milestones during the last 250 years in Ellicott City and Howard County is set to premiere at the close of the town’s Sestercentennial year on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8th!. A signature piece of Ellicott City’s 250th anniversary celebration, this magical, entertaining, educational, family-oriented musical features 19 songs in a variety of musical genres.

The musical tells the story of significant people and events in the history of Ellicott City and Howard County when a family inadvertently opens a portal through time in Grandma’s attic! Pieces of days-gone-by scatter across the room as forgotten memories fill the house, figures of the past dance across the floor, and the walls reverberate with their songs.   It is up to the kids to find a way to piece this puzzle back together again before all of space and time breaks loose at Grandma and Pop’s.  These are the pieces they will build their future on.  Can they save their past–and their future?  Time will tell or rather, time will sing!

Prominent historical characters connected to Ellicott City’s history populate the scenes including the Ellicott Brothers, Charles Carroll, Benjamin Banneker, and even Babe Ruth.  Lyrics also highlight the Patapsco River, the famous race between the horse and the Tom Thumb steam engine, and even the large rock on Ellicott City’s historic Main Street.  And, of course there is even a nod to Jim Rouse, the 60s, and his planned city of Columbia as the musical draws to a close.
